”BMW M3の歴史”

1982年に登場したBMWのE30シリーズの中で、グループAレースのホモロゲーション取得を前提に開発され、1985年に発表されたモデルがM3です。

エンジンはM1やM635CSiに搭載された名機M88型DOHCエンジン3.5L直列6気筒エンジンを礎とする2.3L直列4気筒エンジンで、組み合わされるトランスミッションはZF製ノーマルパターンまたはゲトラグ製レーシングパターンの、いずれも5速MTが選択可能でした。

ボディは3シリーズをベースとしながらも様々な変更が施されています。M3のデザイン上の代名詞となったブリスターフェンダーの採用によりワイドトレッド化され、よりファットなタイヤを収めるよう変更がされました。 またハイデッキ化されたトランクには、これもM3のデザインアイコンである大型のリアウィングが標準で装備されています。

上級車種の5シリーズ用ブレーキシステムが奢られるなどストッピングパワーも大幅に強化されており、まさにグループAレースを戦い抜くことを主眼に置いた1台だったのです。

1987年には日本への正規輸入も始まり、1990年に生産が終了するまで世界各国で愛され続けました。世界中のコンパクトスポーツセダンの指標となった1台であり、今日のM3人気の礎と築いたモデルでもあります。

In June of 2016, this individual was given a major refreshment: the air conditioning evaporator was replaced with a genuine new unit; the cylinder-head cover was re-painted in order to get the beautiful appearance back. This M3 retains remarkably high degree of originality in the interior, the exterior, and the mechanical sections with the only exception of the aluminum wheels by MK Motorsports known widely for the close relationship with BMW in the world of racing.

Because the previous owner did not want to compromise torsional rigidity of the body, it is not equipped with a sunroof which was a popular optional item back then. The car has a strong character of specification that is the most suitable for a car with traits of motor sports.

“The history of the BMW M3”

M3 was introduced in 1985 after being developed for a homologation of Group A races as a part of E30 series which launched in 1982.

The M3 carried a 2.3-liter inline 4-cylinder engine based upon the masterpiece M88, 3.5-liter DOHC inline 6-unit equipped in cars like M1 and M635 CSi. The customers were able to choose between the h-pattern gearbox by ZF and dogleg pattern unit by Getrag.

Even though the body shell was based on the standard 3 series, the M3 was fitted with iconic wide fender flares at all four corners to accommodate fat tires. The lifted trunk deck featured a large rear spoiler, another distinctive exterior feature for the M3. The braking power was also upgraded by adapting the larger brake system which was originally equipped on the bigger and heavier 5 series. Above performance enhancements, combined with other modifications, gave the M3 what it takes to be successful in Group A competition.

BMW officially started importing the M3s to Japan in 1987 and they enjoyed the phenomenal success on both tracks and roads all over the world till the production ceased in 1990. It long remained the embodiment of what a compact sport sedan ought to be.
