ポルシェカップやGTレースへの参戦を希望する顧客向けとして発表されたスポーツモデルがポルシェ911GT3です。 タイプ996で初めて設定されて以降、各世代の911を代表するハードコアな存在として知られるようになりました。

996世代、つまり初代GT3は1999年に1400台が限定生産されると発表されましたが、予想をはるかに上回る人気を受けて、最終的には1889台がラインオフしています。

ボディーは剛性がより高いとされるカレラ4用をベースとしており、いわゆるGT1クランクケースやターボ用のブレーキシステムを採用するなど、モータースポーツを意識した数々の特別な装備を備えています。 用意されたトランスミッションは6速MTのみ。

またクラブスポーツパッケージもオプションで設定され、軽量フライホイールや6点式シートベルト、ボルトオンロールケージがセットとなっていました。

“The History of the Porsche 911 (type 996) GT3”

Porsche 911 GT3 was introduced as a high performance 911 for the customers who were wanting to compete in Porsche Carrera Cup and GT races. The first-generation GT3 debuted as a part of the type 996 lineups and it became known as a hardcore sibling of the 911 of each generation.
